At The Olive Press we are passionate about olives and olive oil. Making delicious, fresh New Zealand olive oil is what we do. We are committed to producing premium quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil and making the very best oil from our own and customers’ olives.

As a company, we are committed to sustainable production and waste minimisation from olive oil processing. We are working toward a zero waste goal. We have committed substantial funds to R&D over recent years to explore alternate uses for our biowaste stream and development of value added bio-products. Results are looking promising. Currently our sansa (olive pulp and pit waste) is composted or used for soil conditioning.

We are strongly supportive of the New Zealand olive sector and are a member of Olives New Zealand. All our oils are independently lab-certified and registered under the Olivemark® licence scheme to demonstrate they are authentic New Zealand olive oils produced from locally grown olives and processed at our Greytown facility under a Ministry of Primary Industries food safety programme. We also belong to the Australian Olives Association and benefit from the knowledge and experience of the Australian olive industry and the considerable research that is undertaken there supported by the industry and government.

Where we started

The Olive Press Ltd was established in 2000 with the purchase of an olive press from Italy by a group of enthusiastic olive grove owners in the South Wairarapa and a number of Italian investors. Under the stewardship of Ian and Robin Lockie, founders of the highly-regarded Olivo grove in Martinborough, The Olive Press began making olive oil in 2001. Rod Lingard took over as Chair in 2007 and Bruce McCallum became the original Managing Director soon after. Katrina Bach, Rod’s partner, took on the Managing Director role from Bruce in 2020 as the business expanded.

From a rather humble beginning in an old apple packing shed in Masterton, The Olive Press has evolved into a modern, technology-based operation and olive grove management company with expertise in every aspect of olive cultivation and oil production. From a simple processing operation that ran for around 10 weeks a year we are now a year-round business managing multiple olive groves and providing a range of services to our customers operating from our purpose-built premises in Greytown.

Over the years we have invested in R&D and technology, processing improvements and skilled people to develop the business, ensure production of premium quality olive oils and to deliver quality services to our customers.

While shareholdings have changed over time several original shareholders still remain. Many of our processing customers have been pressing with us from the beginning and it is a privilege to be part of their journey and the outstanding olive oils they produce. It is also exciting to welcome new processing clients and new olive grove owners to The Olive Press whanau. We all share a passion for premium New Zealand Olive Oils.
